I have an old Cinema Display (that works great) using the ADC connector and the Apple ADC to DVI converter. Can I buy a DVI to Mini Display Port converter to connect this to my MacBookPro?

I'm glad it worked for you with the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Video Adapter Converter. But I don't get it - from where does the Apple Cinema Display get the power? Does it then take power from your Macbook and is that ok?

So you want to go ADC --> DVI --> mDP (mini displayport) with two adapters? My gut reaction is no it won't work because chaining multiple adapters is problematic. But it doesn't hurt to try of course.
There may be an alternative, albeit pricy. Could you use a Apple M8661LL/B DVI-I to ADC Display Adapter? You can google it but here's a couple of links:

but the problem is I already have the Apple ADC to DVI adapter. It was working great until up upgraded to a new MacBook which only has a Mini Display Port - no DVI connection. I just want to be able to connect to the old display. Looks like I may have to gamble on a DVI to MiniD Port converter and see what happens. I know its an old model, but I though Apple would have a solution for this...

After trying a few converters I found one that did the trick: StarTech.com's 'Mini DisplayPort to DVI Video Adapter Converter'.
$16 bucks from Office Depot and I'm back in business
